The New World Economy - Women and Girls in High Tech

On November 9-10, 2001, three Women's Bureau regions in the Northeast, along with the New York Governor’s Office for Women, New Jersey Division for Women, Pennsylvania and Connecticut state commissions and information technology businesses, sponsored a Tri-Regional Symposium, “The New World Economy: Women and Girls in High Tech.”

Story Continued

The symposium brought together approximately 90 women from seven States who are leaders in business, industry, and education in non-profit and government sectors. These dynamic women discussed the under representation of women and girls in high tech fields and participated in the development of a regional strategy for educating, recruiting, retaining and supporting women in high tech.

"The women who presented at this conference and the organizers were inspiring and energizing!"

One immediate outcome of the symposium is that participants from the New York area formed a group called New York Women-Science, Math, Engineering and Technology [NYSMET]. This group's goal is to empower young girls to enter the fields of science, math, engineering and technology. To put their plan in action, NYSMET developed a listserve. The members are meeting monthly to further define their mission and plan of action. Joanne Clemente, who helped to start NYSMET, wrote us that the conference was a real catalyst for action: “The women who presented at this conference and the organizers were inspiring and energizing! The women who were present felt a sense of support and empowerment from government agencies as well as from the private sector. We want to get busy and make things happen for women and girls in New York State”.
