Welcome to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Podcast recall review for February 3, 2006.

Here are some of the recalls announced by CPSC recently:

This week, CPSC re-announced the of recall two firms’ baby walkers and announced a new baby walker recall.

All of the recalled walkers can fit through a standard doorway, and are not designed to stop at the edge of a step. Babies using these walkers can be seriously injured or killed. Bike Pro Inc. recalled about 50,000 baby walkers in 2002 and SunTome Trading Corp. recalled about 600 baby walkers in 2001. Ace Han Corp. announced the new recall of about 1,000 baby walkers.

The Bike Pro baby walkers have musical activity trays with various toys and themes, including rockets and a tank with an army print cloth seat; lights and a steering wheel with a teddy bear cloth seat; and a monkey’s face with a teddy bear cloth seat. “Baby” and Bebelove” are printed on some of the walkers. They were sold at independent stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Texas, Michigan Missouri and New York.

SunTome walkers have activity trays with steering wheels, various rattles and a mirror, or animal themes. The tray plays music when the baby pushes a button. “Baby” is written on a sticker on the tray or walker’s base.

Ace Han walkers have “Imported by Ace Han Corp.” printed on a label located on the base of the walkers.

Consumers should stop using the recalled walkers immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information, go to www.cpsc.gov to see the full recall announcements, or call CPSC’s Hotline at 1 (800) 638-2772.

DESA Heating Products is recalling about 54,400 Portable Propane Convection Heaters

The burners on these heaters can “flashback”, which is when fire burns inside the burner tube rather than out the end. This can cause the lower portion of the burner tube to get hot enough to ignite combustible material under the heater.

DESA has received 40 reports of incidents possibly caused by the flashback hazard, including six reports of fires. The other 34 reported incidents involved minor property damage, including scorching of the flooring under the heater. There have been no reports of injury.

The recall involves DESA “40 to 80,000” BTU Portable Propane Convection Heaters with the following model names: Reddy Heater, All-Pro, MASTER, Universal, and Dayton. They were sold at Home centers and hardware stores nationwide from August 2005 through December 2005 for between $100 and $130. Consumers should stop using the recalled heater immediately and return it to the store where purchased for a free replacement, refund or store credit.

Consumers should check the model and serial numbers, which are on labels attached to the heater, to see if it is included in this recall. For more information, consumers can contact their local retailer, or they can contact DESA toll-free at (866) 279-3225 between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit the DESA Web site at www.desatech.com
