Audio Clip - Information on Carbon Monoxide (CO) (January 4, 2006)

Transcript

If you plan to use a portable generator after storms knock out your power, make sure you keep it outside and away from doors, windows and vents that can allow CO to come indoors. NEVER use a generator inside your house or garage. It produces carbon monoxide, which can be deadly.

An average of about 77 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by all types of heating systems. Install carbon monoxide alarms in your homes. They could save your families’ lives.

Carbon monoxide is a tasteless, odorless, colorless gas. Even if you can’t smell fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. The symptoms are similar to the flu. So if you feel sick dizzy or weak while inside, but feel better every time you leave the home, there might be carbon monoxide present.
