The 2008 HIV/AIDS Implementers' Meeting took place in Kampala, Uganda from June 3-7, 2008, drawing more than 1,700 HIV/AIDS implementers from Uganda and throughout the world.

Malawi Ministry of Health Holds Second Annual HIV Counseling and Testing Week
The nation-wide HIV Testing and Counseling (HTC) week was held July 16-21, 2007. Approximately 1,367 HTC sites offered services during the awareness week. A majority of the testing sites were mobile, providing a way to reach people in rural areas. Reaching rural populations -- historically a very difficult population to reach -- was critical to the success of the HTC week.

Botswana Rolls Out Treatment in Remote Areas
In remote places like Bokspits, Botswana, a growing number of people are accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART) thanks to support from the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Emergency Plan/PEPFAR). The Kgalahadi District in Botswana was one of the first to roll out treatment to several rural clinics, enabling patients to receive medications where they live instead of traveling long distances.

Ambassador Dybul visits Côte d'Ivoire (July 2007)
On Monday, July 16, 2007, Ambassador Mark Dybul, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, arrived in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire to consult with top Ivorian government officials and to visit PEPFAR-supported HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care projects.

Hip Hop Artists Sing Out Against HIV/AIDS in Tanzania
The Hip Hop Artists Against AIDS Initiative kicked off July 11 and 12, 2007 with a two day concert in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania featuring American hip-hop group, Native Deen. The free, two-day event also included educational sessions between performances including questions and answer sessions, quiz competitions, and other forms of information sharing. Local artists AY, Fid-q, Joe Makini, Mh Temba, Unique Sisters, K-Lin, Banana Zorro, Nako 2 Nako, and Jumanne IDD also performed.

"Real Man, Real Woman" HIV/AIDS Prevention Campaign
The First Lady of Zambia, Maureen Mwanawasa, and U.S. Ambassador to Zambia, Carmen Martinez, launched the “Real Man, Real Woman” HIV/AIDS prevention campaign in Lusaka, Zambia on May 11, 2007. During the launch at Chawama Basic School, the First Lady and Ambassador Martinez called on Zambian youth to resist pressures to engage in sexual coercion and encouraged parents to talk about the topic with their children.

Zebras 4 Life, Test 4 Life Campaign Update
On April 18-19, 2007, two players from the Zebras national football (soccer) team visited the villages of Pandamatenga and Kachikau in northern Botswana in conjunction with the Zebras 4 Life, Test 4 Life HIV testing campaign. So far, the campaign has visited more than 30 villages and tested close to 1,700 people.

International Women's Day and World TB Day Seminar
BOTUSA communications staff and the U.S. Embassy teamed up with the Botswana Women Media Association to commemorate two important days in March: International Women's Day (March 8) and World TB Day (March 24). The event was a one-day seminar (March 27, 2007) on gender and tuberculosis which targeted women working as home based care officers, family welfare educators, counselors and media practitioners.
