An image emphasizing a new headline. Board Accepts Commissioner's Resignation, Names Interim
During a special-called meeting Wednesday, January 7, the Kentucky Board of Education agreed to accept the resignation of Kentucky Education Commissioner Jon E. Draud. The board approved a motion naming Deputy Commissioner Elaine Farris as interim commissioner. She will serve in that capacity until the position is filled permanently and will not be a candidate for the position.  See press release for more information.

The Kentucky Teaching and Learning Conference (KTLC), scheduled for March 4-6, 2009, has been cancelled. The cancellation is due to the current fiscal and budgetary restraints across state government agencies, including local school districts. Staff at the Kentucky Department of Education thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this difficult financial environment.  We hope to partner with you again for future conferences when the Commonwealth’s fiscal outlook improves.  See the KTLC website for more information.

Jon E. Draud, Kentucky’s fourth commissioner of education, today announced that he would resign the position effective in early February.  See press release for more information.

The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Lessons are now available
The Lincoln Bicentennial Teacher Network has created lessons/units for P-12 aligned to Kentucky standards.  The lessons, along with support materials, were created to commemorate the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln and focus on his many contributions to America and the world.  Additional information on the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial can be found here.

Draud Outlines Kentucky's Progress in P-12 Education
Kentucky Education Commissioner Jon E. Draud says that, although Kentucky faces many obstacles in the struggle to raise academic achievement for its public school students, the state has made remarkable progress in the nearly 20 years since the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) was passed.  See press release for more information.
