Job Accommodations
Among its portfolio of assets to assist employers in locating, hiring, and promoting employees with disabilities, The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has two nationwide toll-free services: The Employer Assistance and Recruiting Network (EARN) and the Job Accommodation Network (JAN). Both JAN and EARN have recently collected data that can help employers understand and help others promote the benefits to employers of hiring people with disabilities.
The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is a toll-free information and referral service on job accommodations for people with disabilities. In addition, JAN analyzes trends and statistical data related to the assistance it provides. JAN can be accessed by phone or TTY at 1-800-526-7234 or 1-800-ADA-WORK (1-800-232-9675) or by via its website .
Many employers maintain many misconceptions about the cost of accommodating employees with disabilities believing that accommodations will be expensive, difficult, impractical, and not worth the effort and expense. To separate facts from fiction, the Job Accommodation Network moved beyond the anecdotes by conducting a rigorous assessment of the benefits to employers of providing accommodations. Speaking by telephone, JAN interviewed organizations that made accommodations and tabulated the actual costs incurred by the employers and the benefits obtained by the accommodations.
More information about the findings from the JAN research on the costs and benefits of accommodations is available here.
