EMBARGOED UNTIL: NOV. 8, 1995 (WEDNESDAY) Public Information Office CB95-196 301-457-3030 301-457-4067 (TDD) Amara Bachu 301-457-2449 ONE IN FIVE NEVER-MARRIED WOMEN HAVE CHILDREN, CENSUS BUREAU REPORTS EMBARGOED UNTIL: NOV. 8, 1995 (WEDNESDAY) - Of the nation's 22.7 million never-married women, one out of every five had given birth to at least one child by 1994, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau reported today. Approximately 7 percent of never-married teens and about 40 percent of never-married women in their thirties had a child out-of-wedlock, the bureau said in a report titled "Fertility of American Women: June 1994" (P20-482). Other report highlights: - Of the 60 million women aged 15 to 44 in June 1994, 3.9 million had a child between July 1993 and June 1994. Over one-half of the women who gave birth were in the labor force in 1994, not significantly different from 1990. - Foreign-born women in this country had a birth rate of about one and one-half times higher than native-born women--93 and 62 births per 1,000 women, respectively. - Mexican-American women had a birth rate of 111 births per 1,000 women, approximately double that of non- Hispanic women (61 per 1,000). - Of all African American women births in 1994, 66 percent were to unmarried women, compared with 19 percent for White women. Data on Hispanic-origin persons were collected in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, but not in Puerto Rico. The data were collected in the June 1994 Current Population Survey. As with all surveys, the data are subject to sampling and other sources of error. Data presented in this report on the level of out-of-wedlock childbearing are generally below the levels reported by the National Center for Health Statistics due to differences in data collection procedures.-X-Editor's note: media representatives may obtain a copy of the report from the Census Bureau's Public Information Office on 301- 457-3030; fax: 301-457-3670; or e-mail: pio@census.gov.
