The Use of Recycled Solid Automotive Paint Wastes as Ingredients in Automotive Sealant Products

EPA Contract Number: 68D40035
Title: The Use of Recycled Solid Automotive Paint Wastes as Ingredients in Automotive Sealant Products
Investigators: Gerace, Michael J.
Small Business: Aster Inc.
EPA Contact: Manager, SBIR Program
Phase: I
Project Period: September 1, 1994 through March 1, 1995
Project Amount: $54,800
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase I (1993)
Research Category: Hazardous Waste/Remediation , SBIR - Hazardous and Solid Waste

Description:

About 75,000,000 lbs. of paint sludge is generated by the U.S. automotive industry each year. This type of waste (and similar streams in other industries) make a significant contribution to landfills. A proposed solution is to recycle the paint sludge into compounding ingredients for automotive sealants -- hence the waste generated by the car manufacturing process goes back onto the car. Aster's method is to utilize the useful ingredients from the paint sludge and to compound these materials into a sealant that meets current auto makers specifications for paintable sealants. Aster already has developed recycling technology and a sealant formulation prototype, however, development is needed to allow the sealant to meet specification standards of the automotive industry. If commercialized and brought to full potential, all U.S. generated automotive paint sludge can be utilized as a component of various paintable sealer compositions. Aster's research team has done extensive work in the field of automotive sealants and the recycling of paint sludge.
