Highway Work Zone

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) hosts a "Focus on Congestion Relief" Web site that highlights FHWA efforts to ease congestion in the United States. Included is a "Congestion Reduction Toolbox," which provides links to tools for 1) Improving Service on Existing Roads; 2) Pricing; 3) Add Capacity; 4) Better Work Zones; 5) Travel Options, and 6) Traveler Information. The Web site also includes links to congestion reduction activities and toolboxes for each state.

The U.S. DOT Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Joint Program Office hosts an ITS Benefits Database that includes many technological solutions to congestion as well as the benefits of implementing them. Some of the technologies included in the database that can help reduce congestion are: 1) Arterial Management Systems; 2) Freeway Management Systems; 3) Transit Management Systems; 4) Incident Management Systems; 5) Emergency Management Systems; 6) Electronic Payment & Pricing; 7) Traveler Information; 8) Crash Prevention & Safety; 9) Roadway Operations & Maintenance; 10) Road Weather Management; and 11) Commercial Vehicle Operations & Intermodal Freight.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has a Technology Web site that includes a number of resources for using transit services and technologies to help reduce congestion. Some of these technologies include: 1) Bus Rapid Transit; 2) Bus Technologies and Testing Information; 3) Intelligent Transportation Systems for Transit; and 4) Rail Technology and Systems Information.
