UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 389,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 408,000. The 4-week moving average was 406,000, a decrease of 13,750 from the previous week's revised average of 419,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Dec. 28, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 28 was 3,445,000, an increase of 35,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,410,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,450,750, an increase of 44,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,406,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 614,778 in the week ending Jan. 4, a decrease of 5,875 from the previous week. There were 637,343 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.2 percent during the week ending Dec. 28, an increase of 0.5 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,085,922, an increase of 655,715 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.3 percent and the volume was 4,225,414.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Dec. 21.

53 states reported that 734,091 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Dec. 21.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,255 in the week ending Dec. 28, a decrease of 606 from the prior week. There were 813 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 542 from the preceding week.

There were 19,838 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 21, a decrease of 3,288 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,889, a decrease of 2,015 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 21 were in Alaska (5.5 percent), Oregon (4.5), Washington (4.4), Puerto Rico (4.1), Idaho (3.9), Pennsylvania (3.9), Wisconsin (3.5), Arkansas (3.4), California (3.4), and Massachusetts (3.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 28 were in Wisconsin (+28,909), Pennsylvania (+21,710), Massachusetts (+16,070), Michigan (+15,518), and Kentucky (+9,718), while the largest decreases were in California (-9,541), North Carolina (-8,819), Virginia (-3,472), Texas (-3,138), and Alabama (-2,826).
