UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Sept. 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 424,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 433,000. The 4-week moving average was 418,500, an increase of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average of 411,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Sept. 7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending Sept. 7 was 3,615,000, an increase of 71,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 3,544,000. The 4-week moving average
was 3,562,000, an increase of 29,500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 3,532,500. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 332,771 in the week ending Sept. 14, an increase of 14,617 from the previous week. There were 317,245 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Sept. 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,133,838, an increase of 82,054 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,793,972. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Aug. 31. 53 states reported that 1,076,086 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Aug. 31. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,253 in the week ending Sept. 7, a decrease of 120 from the prior week. There were 1,312 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 125 from the preceding week. There were 16,769 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 31, a decrease of 956 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,449, a decrease of 21 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 31 were in Puerto Rico (4.4 percent), Oregon (3.5), Washington (3.5), Alaska (3.4), New Jersey (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.3), Massachusetts (3.2), California (3.1), Connecticut (3.0), and the Virgin Islands (2.9). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 7 were in North Carolina (+4,821), Texas (+2,835), Pennsylvania (+1,982), Virginia (+1,337), and Alabama (+1,330), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,659), New Jersey (-1,434), Arkansas (-898), Puerto Rico (-639), and Ohio (-467).
