U.S. Department of Labor Announces $2 Million in Funding to Aid Dislocated California Workers

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $2 million—with an initial release of $665,000—to assist dislocated workers in California affected by flooding in San Joaquin County.

“This Administration is dedicated to helping dislocated workers get back on their feet,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. “This $2 million in funding will help revitalize the area affected by this disaster and provide jobs for workers who can help clean up and restore businesses and communities in San Joaquin County.”

The grant was awarded to the California Employment Development Department and will provide assistance to approximately 90 workers in San Joaquin County, including those who lost their jobs as a result of flooding caused by a break in the Jones Tract levee.

Eligibility for public assistance in the wake of the flooding is determined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In addition to temporary employment, assistance will include supportive services such as transportation, access to work-related equipment, emergency medical assistance and child care. Participants who complete their temporary jobs may be eligible for re-employment assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines.
