Institutional barriers to employment of older workers

Social Security and private pension rules often encourage early retirement; those who wish to keep working typically face a part-time job market which provides few well-paid jobs. This article discusses various institutional obstacles faced by older persons who might want to work. It is divided into three sections: (1) the impact of Social Security regulations and pension policies on work activity; (2) the market for part-time jobs; and (3) age discrimination.
