Special Collections: Folio Collection Flint Auto Worker (later CIO Automobile Worker, Flint edition)
On February 27, 1939, the Flint Auto Worker, vol. 1, no. 2 appeared as a special edition printed on asbestoes. This was allegedly due to a defiant response to threats to burn the UAWA-CIO offices in Flint, MI. The news item below is in a clipping accompanying the Library's asbestos edition: "Boys Will Have Tough Time Burning Asbestos Edition" One presentation copy of this second issue of the Flint Auto Worker has been printed on thin asbestos for the special use of the goon squads who want to burn our papers rather than let the auto workers of Flint know the truth about Homer Martin's attempt to lead them out of the CIO. If the news in the Flint Auto Worker is too hot for the Martin men, they
can read it in the special asbestos issue. The asbestos copy will be on file at
the UAWA-CIO office in Capitol Hotel when it is not being offered at the gates
of various plants where the Flint Auto Worker is regularly distributed. |
