Description: | Huron County, Ohio has installed a bridge made out of plastic on a rural road. The plastic bridge is reinforced with fiber glass, with the only metal being the guardrails. This type of bridge is expected to last considerably longer and better withstand the effects of weather than traditional bridges. Because of the modular design and light weight, it can be quickly installed. The bridge contains 16 gauges to measure the strain placed on the bridge by the loads that cross it, and eight that measure deflection due to traffic. The effects of cyclical heating and cooling, and even sunlight exposure, on the plastic will be studied to assess whether the material can be used on a broader basis. The study and installation of the bridge was facilitated by a $155,000 Federal Highway Administration grant. |
