Abstract : Although sturgeons are an important fisheries resource in North American (and worldwide in the northern hemisphere) most basic aspects of their biology are poorly understood. Information is particularly scarce on early life history, long-term population dynamics, habitat selection, migration, and reproductive ecology. Besides overharvest, damming rivers is the second greatest anthropogenic impact on sturgeon worldwide. Despite this, little is known about how to pass any sturgeon in a fish passage facility. The research addresses each of the biological aspects previously mentioned and fish passage Emphasis is placed on using shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum, a small species in the northeast United States, as a model species to develop conceptual models of various life history traits, then testing the generality of the model using foreign species. Spawning habitat requirements of shortnose sturgeon were determined in two US rivers.
