Summary:The IG testified before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee concerning progress made and challenges remaining as NHTSA implements the TREAD Act. The testimony focused on three areas that NHTSA must address to successfully complete the Act's requirements:

  • Completing TREAD Act rules in a timely and comprehensive manner;
  • Formalizing a peer review process to ensure decisions concerning investigations of potential defects are discussed by senior officials; and
  • Ensuring that the $5 million effort to develop a new defect information management system will meet NHTSA's needs and be delivered within cost and schedule estimates.
