Federal Highway Administration and Preserve AmericaThe Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plays an important role in the Preserve America program and heritage tourism. FHWA programs create and maintain the safe infrastructure upon which long distance and local, commercial and leisure travel depend. The partnerships to promote preservation and heritage tourism encouraged by the Preserve America program can be fostered effectively by activities of the Transportation Enhancements and the National Scenic Byways Programs. The National Scenic Byways program highlights unique travel experiences, as well as an enhanced local quality of life, that provide a distinctive attraction for visitors. Within the Transportation Enhancement program, many of the eligible activities such as acquisition of scenic and historic easements, creation of bike/ped trails, and rehabilitation of historic transportation facilities, directly support heritage tourism, and many of the projects completed thus far have been effective catalysts for community revitalization and economic development.
