Supporting technological innovation and entrepreneurship
in the developing world

kiwanja.net helps social innovators, entrepreneurs and non-profit organisations make better use of information and communication technologies in their work. Founded by Ken Banks in 2003, kiwanja.net specialises in the application of mobile technology, with a particular emphasis on its role as a driver of innovation, entrepreneurship and social change across the developing world.

Combining over twenty-five years' experience in the technology sector with a degree in social anthropology, and nineteen years experience living and working across Africa, kiwanja.net is based on the values, work and interests of Ken Banks.

Ken has been widely recognised by the technology, entrepreneurship and design communities and is the recipient of numerous international awards including:

Pizzigati Prize for Software in the Public Interest (2011)
Curry Stone Design Prize (2011)
Ashoka Fellowship (2011)
National Geographic Emerging Explorer (2010)
Tech Awards Laureate (2009)
Pop!Tech Social Innovation Fellow (2008)

kiwanja.net focuses on three key activity areas:

Writing. We contribute to the advancement of our field through the publication of guest articles and book chapters, by giving interviews, and blogging
Building. We build low-tech, appropriate technologies to empower the social change community - tools such as FrontlineSMS
Speaking. We make regular appearances at international conferences, universities and companies, and on radio and television, around the world

Since its inception thousands of innovators, entrepreneurs and non-profit organisations in over eighty countries have benefited from kiwanja.net activities.

kiwanja.net also has a strong track record in IT consultancy, and over the past few years has acted as an advisor to a number of international organisations including UNEP, Fauna & Flora International and The Grameen Technology Centre. Further information on each of our activity areas can be found throughout this site.
