Health Factors
    Potential symptoms: Eye, skin irritation; in animals, high systemic doses caused CNS depression (lethargy, coma), gasping respiration; dacryorrhea (excessive tears), anemia, enlarged livers (with no histologic lesions; reversible) and kidney damage.

    Health Effects: Irritation-Eye, Skin---Mild (HE16); Kidney damage (HE3); Nervous system disturbances---Narcosis (HE8); Lung edema (HE11).

    Affected organs: Kidneys, respiratory system, eyes, skin, CNS

    Notes: 1) OSHA does not have a PEL for 1-butoxy-2-propanol. 2) It is a metabolite of dipropylene glycol n-butyl ether and further metabolized by O-dealkylation to propylene glycol and butanol (metabolized to carbon dioxide) or by conjugation with sulfate or glucuronide for urinary excretion. 3) Repeated-dose inhalational studies in rats indicated a NOAEL of 700 ppm (the maximum attainable concentration in air).
