Secretary Kempthorne Announces $1 million for Wetlands Grants in Michigan

The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission, chaired by Department of the Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, recently approved $1 million in federal funding to support the second phase of the Saginaw Bay to Lake Erie Coastal Habitat Project in Michigan. The commission allocated more than $26 million to protect, restore, improve and manage more than 135,000 acres of vital wetland areas and associated wildlife habitats across the U.S. under the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA).

The project targets protection, restoration and enhancement of Great Lakes coastal marshes and shorelines, expansion of state and federal wildlife areas, and restoration and enhancement of privately owned wetlands and nearby uplands important for waterfowl production. The restoration area includes portions of Michigan's major waterfowl migration corridor around Saginaw Bay, and the Lake St. Clair and western Lake Erie watersheds. These areas are populated by mallards, American black ducks, and greater and lesser scaup. The native grassland restoration will benefit the Henslow's sparrow, bobolink, sedge wren, eastern meadowlark, and other grassland birds.

The partners in this project are part of the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture (UMR/GLR JV) and will contribute more than $2 million in matching funds to help support these conservation effects. More information about NAWCA grant programs and summaries of the projects approved is available on the Web at: http://www.fws.gov/birdhabitat/Grants/NAWCA/Standard/US/2008_Sept.shtm and more information about the UMR/GLR JV is available at http://www.uppermissgreatlakesjv.org/.
