Taken Questions Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC December 20, 2001 Question Taken at December 20, 2001 Daily Press Briefing Greece: New Aegean Maps
Question: Has the U.S. changed its policy on the maritime boundary between Greece and Turkey, as shown in recent maps produced by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA)? Answer: It is U.S. policy not to depict maritime boundaries on topographic maps. This policy is long-standing. We refer you to the Department of Defense for further information. We understand that the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) has recently digitized its medium scale topographic maps of the Aegean region in a joint co-production arrangement with its mapping counterparts in Greece and Turkey. The agency revised its paper maps from this Aegean digital data-set and has made them available to our NATO partners. |
