Travels
- Born in Furth, Germany, on May 27, 1923;
- Emigrated to the United States in 1938;
- Served in the U.S. Army in World War II;
- Married Anne Fleischer in 1949-divorced in 1964;
- Married Nancy Maginnes in 1974;
- Earned his B.A. in 1950, M.A. in 1952, and Ph.D. in 1954 at Harvard University and was a member of the faculty from 1954 to 1971;
- Consultant on foreign policy in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations; adviser to Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York;
- Named Assistant for National Security Affairs by President Nixon in 1968; In this position his many activities included participation in the 1972 presidential visit to the People's Republic of China and in the negotiations leading to the Vietnam peace agreement;
- Commissioned Secretary of State in President Nixon's Cabinet on September 21, 1973, entered upon duties on September 22, 1973,
- Continued in office under President Ford, and served until January 20, 1977;
- Among other accomplishments as Secretary of State, was instrumental in the signing of cease-fire agreements by Israel with Egypt and Syria in 1973;
- Promoted policy of detente with Soviet Union, which included the signing of trade and arms agreements;
- Dealt with problems of energy and economic cooperation;
- Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1973;
- Lecturer and consultant on foreign affairs.
