Press Statement Philip T. Reeker, Deputy Spokesman Washington, DC November 16, 2001
U.S. Welcomes Passage of Constitutional Amendments in MacedoniaThe United States welcomes the November 16 passage by the Macedonian Parliament of the Constitutional Amendments called for in the Framework Agreement signed by Macedonia's political leaders August 13.
The Amendments represent an historic step forward for Macedonia, which will strengthen inclusive, multiethnic, democratic structures. The Parliament has recognized that the Framework Agreement provides the best opportunity for peace, unity and a prosperous future for all citizens of Macedonia. The United States stands fully behind the Agreement's implementation and resolutely condemns any who seek through violence to undermine the political process in Macedonia.
We look to Macedonia's political leadership to continue their critical work for peace by rapidly passing the Law on Local Self-Government and moving forward expeditiously to meet remaining Framework Agreement commitments without delay.
