Martin Van Buren Secretary of State, Term of Appointment:

- Born at Kinderhook, near Albany, New York, December 5, 1782;
- Attended local schools;
- Admitted to the bar and practiced in Kinderhook in 1803;
- Married Hannah Hoes in 1807;
- Moved to Hudson, New York, where he was surrogate 1808-1813;
- Served in the State Senate 1812-1820;
- Chosen regent of the University of the State of New York in 1815;
- State Attorney General, 1816-1819, residing in Albany;
- Delegate to the State Constitutional Convention of 1821;
- Senator from New York, 1821-1828; was Governor of New York in 1829;
- Secretary of State in President Jackson's Cabinet from March 28, 1829, and served until May 23, 1831;
- As Secretary of State, settled a long-standing dispute with Great Britain over West Indian trade and obtained important treaties with Turkey and France;
- Served as Minister to Great Britain from 1831-1832 on a recess appointment that failed of confirmation by the Senate;
- Vice President of the United States, 1833-1837;
- President of the United States, 1837-1841;
- Unsuccessful candidate for the Presidency on the Democratic ticket in 1840 and on the Free-soil ticket in 1848;
- Retired to "Lindenwald", his country home at Kinderhook, New York, where he died July 24, 1862.
