Examples of How Troops-to-Teachers Works at the Local Level

South Carolina

The South Carolina Transition to Teaching Coalition Alternative Certification Program (SC T3 Coalition) offers military personnel considering a second career as a teacher the opportunity to become certified. The coalition is made up of four South Carolina postsecondary institutions: The Citadel, Clemson University, South Carolina State University, and University of South Carolina. The program is designed for those who already have a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10 college courses in a subject that could be taught at the middle or secondary school level. The program prepares the soldier for a teaching career while continuing to work in a current job.

T3 participants

  • Complete a series of web-based teacher-preparation courses designed specifically for military personnel, no matter where they are stationed;

  • Obtain South Carolina teacher credentials; and

  • Make a smooth transition from military service to public education.

California

The California Teacher Incentive Program (CAL-TRIP), which is administered by the Sacramento County Office of Education, coordinates the California Troops-to-Teachers Program. The CAL-TRIP program was created by the California Legislature to face the critical shortage of teachers in California. The Troops-to-Teachers staff work with the CAL-TRIP recruitment centers to help recruit military personnel who are interested in a second career in teaching.
