Disaster Recovery Aid Tops $2.8 Million - Flood Disaster-Recovery Assistance Update

Moorhead, MN -- Families and individuals in declared counties who have suffered from the floods beginning June 9 are quickly receiving assistance from federal, state, local and voluntary agencies. These agencies are working in partnership to speed help to Minnesota residents.
The following counties are included in the Presidential disaster declaration for individual assistance, public assistance, and/or both: Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Red Lake, Becker, Beltrami, Clay, Pennington, Polk, and Roseau.
Recovery services summary at close of business Friday, June 28, 2002:
- 2,117 total applications have been received through
the FEMA toll free number (800) 621-FEMA, (TDD - 800-402-7585). Individuals
and business owners call to register for federal and state aid.
- Eighty-eight percent of inspections in Roseau County
have been completed. Inspections are now being performed in all declared
counties.
- $2,306,959 in disaster housing assistance approved.
- $72,946 from the Individual and Family Grant program
has been approved and the first checks were dispersed 12 days after
the June 14 federal declaration.
- $357,900 has been approved by the U.S. Small Business
Administration.29 applicants have leased travel trailers for temporary
housing in Roseau County.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance program (DUA) in
place. The DUA may provide weekly benefit payments to those out of work
due to the disaster, including self-employed persons, farm workers,
farm and ranch owners, and others not covered by regular unemployment
programs. State employment offices administer DUA and application can
be made at any local office.
- Legal services program in place. Free legal services
for those affected by the disaster and in need of services such as replacing
legal documents, transferring titles, contracting problems, will probates,
insurance problems, and certain landlord related problems. Call the
FEMA toll free number.
- One Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) open and located
in Roseau County. Two new DRCs will open Monday, July 1 in Norman and
Mahnomen Counties. Centers will be open until further notice. People
affected by the flood may go to the DRC for assistance with paperwork
and to have questions answered in person.
- 639 people have visited the Roseau County Disaster
Recovery Center.
- 19,911 meals have been served by the American Red
Cross.
- 1,725 meals have been served by the Salvation Army in Roseau and Mahnomen Counties.
