'I Always Wanted to Be a Cowboy': Ray Holloway By Douglas Menville
Decades ago, when Western movies were still popular, small boys could often be heard saying that when they grew up, they wanted to be either a cowboy or in the movies.
Ray Holloway fulfilled both those dreams.
Ray Holloway
Ray grew up in Porterville, California. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. When he came
home he achieved the first of his goals by becoming a cowboy and going into the cattle business. He loved it.
But Fate was—almost literally—waiting in the wings, and in 1948 Ray found himself roped into a role in a local play.
Of course he played a cowboy! He enjoyed the experience but never dreamed he would become a movie actor. A scout from
Paramount Pictures was in the audience and talked Ray into coming to Hollywood, where he appeared in a number of
Westerns with such luminaries as Glenn Ford, Red Skelton and John Wayne.
