STATWIZ

Project Quality is enhanced when a statistical basis is used for designing research projects and for analyzing resulting data. Because the risk management laboratory does not have access to a federal statistician, researchers use various statistical packages to perform required activities. Some researchers have enlisted contractor support. The result has been inconsistent, and sometimes incorrect, use of statistics. In 2000, the Land Remediation and Pollution Control Quality Assurance (QA) Manager requested a statistical guidance document be developed by the QA support contractor, Neptune and Company. This guidance document evolved into a web-based statistical tool called StatWiz. StatWiz is designed to be free Open Source software. The analytical engine underlying StatWiz is R, a free Open Source statistical programming language. StatWiz provides statistical guidance coupled with dynamic statistical design, analysis, and interpretation capabilities in a web-based environment. The guidance is directed towards implementation of the underlying statistical methods combined with interpretation and advice on selecting statistical methods depending on the form of the input data. This will promote consistent and correct use of statistical tools.
