Think twice about food safety
Public Health - Seattle & King County and the food industry want to encourage you to "think twice" about the care you take to keep the food you serve safe to eat. And when you eat out - either at a restaurant or at someone else's home, you can "think twice" when ordering and eating what is served. When you think twice about the way the food is handled, cooked and served, you can lower the risk of food borne illness, and keep yourself and those you love safe.
Think twice when shopping
- When you grocery shop, buy any meat, fish or poultry last, take it home immediately, and put it in the refrigerator right away.
- Put raw meat, fish and poultry in the refrigerator where it cannot drip on any foods that won't be cooked before eating ("ready-to-eat").
Think twice when eating out
- Order your hamburgers well done, cooked to 155° F. or more.
- Be sure foods that raw eggs (e.g., salad dressings) are made with pasteurized eggs. Ask your server to be sure.
- Order your eggs cooked well.
- Make sure your hot food is steaming hot, and your cold foods are chilled.
