Free or low-cost health insurance for adults and families

Adults and families may be able to get free or low cost health insurance through Basic Health Plan (Washington State Health Care Authority) or Medicaid (Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.)

Medicaid

Medicaid has two programs that provide free health insurance if you qualify - Family Medical and Family Planning Only.

  1. Family Medical:
    You must be very low income and have a child or dependent to qualify. Click on the following web site and see if you might qualify: www1.dshs.wa.gov/esa/tec

  2. Family Planning Only ("Take Charge"):
    The Family Planning Program is a program to assist low income women and men avoid an unintended pregnancy by offering birth control methods, medical exams, and counseling services related to decisions about when or if to have children.

How to find out if you qualify for Family Planning:

Find your income and family size on the following chart. If your monthly income is below or near the amount on the following chart, you may be able to get Family Planning Only services:

Free or low cost women's health exam with mammogram and Pap test

  1. Visit Public Health's Breast and Cervical Health Program webpage
  2. Call the Community Health Access Program (CHAP) at 1-800-756-5437 for referrals to clinics near you or for more information.
