Ozone Action Days
Ozone Action Days is a public awareness program of Metroplan, in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, Arkansas Department of Health, and the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department. The program is dedicated to helping Central Arkansas breathe easy by keeping you informed about potentially harmful ground-level ozone. Ground-level ozone is the bad type of ozone that is created when pollutants such as vehicle exhaust, chemical solvents and industrial emissions mix with sunlight. Breathing this type of ozone can cause a number of problems including chest pain, coughing, throat irritation, and congestion.
Now that you know what ozone is, you can also learn how to avoid it and what you can do to reduce the emissions that create bad ozone. Every day on this site, you will see the day's ozone status. When ground-level ozone reaches moderate levels, an Ozone Action Day alert will be issued here and on your local news. Based on your health and those in your care, you can use this information to decide whether to limit outdoor activity. During the months of May through September, check in daily at ozoneactiondays.org.
