Joint Press Statement on the U.S.-India Global Issues Forum

The following is the text of a joint press statement issued at the conclusion of the February 1, 2006 U.S.-India Global Issues Forum:

The United States and India held the fourth U.S.-India Global Issues Forum in New Delhi on February 1, 2006. Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Dr. Paula Dobriansky and Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran led interdisciplinary delegations, with the participation of relevant bureaus and offices of the U.S. Department of State along with the Ministry of External Affairs and other Indian ministries.

After the visit of Prime Minister Singh to the United States in July 2005 the Global Issues Forum continues to be an important vehicle for dialogue on global issues of mutual interest and for the development of joint projects that will broadened and deepened the U.S. - India partnership. Our cooperation is based on shared values as longstanding democracies and global leaders.

The Global Issues Forum, held prior to President Bush’s upcoming visit to India, focused on enhanced bilateral cooperation on several key areas including: promoting democracy and human rights; advancing health, environment, science and technology issues; addressing humanitarian assistance and refugees concerns; and combating trafficking in persons.
