News UpdatesSign up to receive DSHS news items via e-mail Flu Surveillance — October 21, 2008DSHS’s latest flu report, for the week ending Oct. 18, classifies flu activity in Texas as “sporadic.”The “sporadic” classification is used when there are small numbers of laboratory-confirmed flu cases and no increases in flu-like illnesses during the week. DSHS reported “sporadic” for the same week last year. There have been no flu-associated pediatric deaths reported this season. Flu is not a reportable condition in Texas, but DSHS relies on reports from a surveillance network to classify flu activity. DSHS reports the weekly classifications to the CDC. CDC’s flu-activity classifications range from no activity to sporadic, local, regional and widespread. This Flu Surveillance item is updated weekly on Tuesday.
