Arkansas’
Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between
the Arkansas Department of Education and the Arkansas Department of Health
and Human Services. Arkansas receives funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide
HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).
The goal of the Arkansas CSHP is to provide leadership, partnership,
professional development, and technical assistance related to the
implementation of CSHPs to improve the health and academic success of
children in Arkansas.Arkansas' Program In Action
Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Providing professional development opportunities to school
personnel, community nurses, prevention specialists, and health
department personnel on using the School Health Index and developing
school wellness policies.
- Conducting workshops throughout the state for health education
teachers to develop and align their curriculum, including nutrition and
physical activity components, with standards-based, skills-based health
education and assessment, to assist students in making the connection
between healthy choices and life skills.
- Collaborating with Community Health Nurse Specialists and Community
Health Promotion Specialists from the Arkansas Department of Health and
Human Services to sponsor workshops to educate state agencies, local
school districts, and area communities on the benefits of having a CSHP
in place in each school district.
- Collaborating with the Arkansas Department of Health Tobacco
Prevention and Cessation Program to develop a plan to fund CSHP
coordinators at the local school district level.
- Collecting, analyzing and presenting evaluation data to local
districts to assist with program planning.
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Collaborating with a nonprofit, community-based organization with
experience working with high-risk youth to provide training in
evidence-based HIV prevention curricula for educators, members of the
Juvenile Detention Association, and the Arkansas School Counselors
Association.
- Providing professional development training for school health
education personnel on aligning the Arkansas health education curriculum
frameworks with materials from the Council of Chief State School
Officers Health Education Assessment Project, as they relate to HIV/STD
and teen pregnancy prevention.
- Collaborating with the CSHP to provide sessions focused on HIV
prevention education and health education assessment for school and
state agency personnel at the CSHP Summer Institute.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Administering the YRBS among students in grades 9 −12 and students
in juvenile detention centers.
- Distributing the YRBS results to interested in-state and
out-of-state stakeholders.
- Using YRBS trend data to determine program planning needs,
particularly for juvenile detention centers.
