NWS Hierarchy: The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Indianapolis is part of the Central Region of the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is in the Department of Commerce (DOC) of the U.S. Federal Government.

NWS Mission Statement: To provide weather and flood warnings, public forecasts and advisories for all of the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, primarily for the protection of life and property. NWS data and products are provided to private meteorologists for the provision of all specialized services.

To accomplish this, the NWS has developed a nationwide observing system providing improved data from new weather satellites, doppler weather radars, balloons, buoys, and other surface based systems including automated surface observing systems and wind profilers. The observed information is processed at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) using sophisticated computer models on some of the most powerful computers in the world. The processed weather information is disseminated to NWS offices and other customers to use in the issuance of weather forecasts, watches and warnings. The NWS office in Indianapolis is staffed by meteorologists, meteorologist interns, hydro-meteorological technicians, electronic technicians, a hydrologist, and an administrative assistant.
