College Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Mini-CourseThe Mini-Course offers New York State CSTEP students an opportunity to participate in a four day introductory mini-course in Bioinformatics to be held at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) during the school winter break. All students from New York State CSTEP Programs are invited to apply. Some of these students return to BNL as part of the Community College Institute (CCI) or Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI). Both of these programs offer students the opportunity to become part of a scientific research team for a summer. The SULI program also offers internships during the fall and spring semesters. Program: The mini-course is conducted by BNL researchers and technicians and offers CSTEP students an introduction to bioinformatics at BNL. It will operate from 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. for four days. It will explore topics in bioinformatics, protein crystallography, 3-D visualization and other topics related to research being conducted at BNL. Program format includes classroom instruction and hands-on lab work, visits to research facilities, tours and internet assignments. First-hand reinforcement of concepts learned will be supported and enhanced by BNL researchers and technical staff. Students are encouraged to apply for 10-week summer programs.
