Referrals Keep a current list of local resources:
Notes: (Read slide continuing from previous one) Image 42 of 44![]() National Toll—Free Hotlines 800–799–SAFE 800–787–3227 (TTD) Notes: In addition to discreetly providing abused patients with phone numbers for local shelters and other services, provide women with this national toll-free number. The hotline is staffed 24 hours a day and has bilingual staff available. A TDD number is available for the deaf or hearing impaired. The hotline has the capacity to link the caller directly with the nearest shelter or crisis line without the caller’s having to redial. The hotline staff also can help you find the nearest shelter so you can begin to compile your own referral network.

Notes: Health care providers are just one part of the solution. The clinician’s role is to help identify intimate partner violence and perform limited interventions. You do not have to do it all. But, in collaboration with others, we can put the pieces together to bring about a solution to the problem of domestic or intimate partner violence.
