DBEDT Release News 04-20

Honolulu - A Census workshop, Making Decisions on Data will be conducted August 9 and 10, 2004 in Honolulu, cosponsored by DBEDT and the U.S. Census Bureau's L.A. Regional Office. The free, "hands-on" workshop will put participants at the keyboard to learn how to obtain Hawaii data from the 2000 Census and the American Community Survey using the Census Bureau's American Factfinder Internet web page.

"Census 2000 data can provide organizations, government agencies and businesses important detailed information about who lives in our communities so that they can provide the appropriate goods and services to that community," said DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu. "This workshop will provide valuable practical knowledge on finding and combining census and other federal data."

Census Bureau Information Specialist Mr. Jerry Wong from the L.A. Regional Office of the Census Bureau will conduct the workshop. The American Community Survey provides annual data for limited areas in Hawaii. Participants will learn how to find information among the many choices found in different federal agencies with data on the Internet.

Mr. Wong has 26 years of experience assisting and educating community groups, businesses, elected officials and the media on the demographic and economic uses of census data. Other topics he will cover include a demonstration of the Census 2000 Public Use Microdata Sample Files for developing custom tabulations of census information, and the use of "Fedstats," an Internet gateway linking users to statistics and information from over 100 U.S. Federal Government agencies. Projections for the U.S. population to 2050 will also be shown.

Space is limited, so interested participants are urged to sign up soon for one of the two, 3-1/2 hour workshop sessions.
