Abstract The replacement of the east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is one of Northern California largest and most expensive building projects in recent history. The 2.18 mile long span will connect the Oakland shore to Yerba Buena Island. It will boast the world's first single-tower self-anchored suspension span and some of the largest and heaviest components ever seen in bridge-building. The new East Span incorporates several state-of-the-art seismic safety features, such as a shock-absorbing hinge system built into the bridge deck. A "lifeline" bridge, the East Span has been designed to provide service within 48 hours of a damaging earthquake, keeping emergency vehicles, people and commerce moving across the Bay. This site illustrates and describes every phase of the new East Span construction. The site explains the need for the new bridge, the challanges of the site, seismic safety considerations, and basic design features. This site also tells the stories and shows the faces and the spirit of the people engaged in the great enterprise of building a new landmark for the Bay Area.
