Abstract Motorcoachs and over-the-road buses are estimated to have carried an estimated 774 million passengers in 1999--making them the largest carrier of passengers. Despite this, little is known about the characteristics of accidents, injuries, and fatalities connected with the motorcoach industry. The web site presents brief findings from a study done by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute at the behest of the American Bus Association. The purpose of the study was to analyze federally bus accident data collected for the years 1995-1999 and contained in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). The primary objective of the analysis was to identify incidents specifically involving OTRBs and observe whether it yielded a new, significant benchmark of differentiation between characteristics of OTRB accidents and other bus types. It is anticipated that new findings from this analysis might provide transportation officials with important information to better evaluate the potential impacts that new safety proposals might hold.
