About Urban & Community Forestry Assistance
The Oregon Department of Forestry´s Urban and Community Forestry Program is staffed by three professionally trained urban foresters who provide assistance to Oregon communities to help them plant, care, and manage their urban forests. The program is supported through a partnership with the USDA Forest Service.
Mission Statement
The mission of the program is to provide leadership and technical services necessary to support the stewardship of Oregon´s urban and community forests, and to foster public awareness of the contributions urban forest ecosystems make to the quality of life and the environmental and economic well-being of Oregon cities.
Program Activities
On-site technical and financial assistance is available for communities, non-profit groups, and civic organizations. Written information on a variety of technical topics including tree ordinances, inventories, tree selection, tree planting, tree care standards, and urban forest management are also available. The staff often serves as speakers at local, regional, or statewide conferences dealing with natural resources and community development topics. Financial assistance activities provided by the program include an annual grant program and a quarterly Small Projects Fund grant opportunity. Educational assistance is provided in the form of continuing education workshops, informal presentations, or conferences and seminars.
Managing Sustainable Community Forests
The Oregon Department of Forestry, in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the Oregon Urban and Community Forest Council, has published "Managing Sustainable Community Forests": An Urban Forestry Plan for More Livable Oregon Communities. (pdf) This publication is a 5 year (1998-2003) strategic plan outlining the necessary steps to help Oregon communities develop healthy, sustained community forestry efforts.
