Renovation
Renovation is one of the major causes of poor indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools, and is often conducted while the building is occupied, resulting in potentially important exposures of occupants to dust, fumes, and hazardous contaminants such as lead or asbestos. When planning and conducting renovations in schools, it is important to remember four potential causes of indoor air problems during renovation and repairs: 1) Demolition that releases toxic materials (e.g., lead, asbestos, or mold); 2) Construction dust and fumes; 3) Designs that interfere with ventilation; and 4) Off-gassing from building materials and new products.

National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP)

Energy Star for Schools
Through the Energy Star program, EPA partners with K-12 school districts, colleges, and universities across the country, providing technical support, guidance on financing options, and recognition for schools wanting to use energy more efficiently. Energy Star has coordinated with EPA's Indoor Air Quality program to address the overlap between energy efficiency upgrades and indoor environmental quality, and it has launched an energy performance rating tool in schools.

Lead in Drinking Water in Schools and Day Care Centers

Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign
Every year, hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent on school incidents involving chemicals such as spills and fires. These incidents involve potentially dangerous chemicals which, in some cases, had been unused for more than thirty years. In addition to financial costs, these spills may also cause school closures that result in a loss of valuable education time. The Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) seeks to address this issue by not only cleaning out excess, legacy, unused, and improperly stored chemicals but also by going a step further and implementing preventive mechanisms in schools.

Chromated Copper Arsenate and It's Use as a Wood Preservative
Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) is a chemical mixture consisting of three pesticidal compounds (arsenic, chromium, and copper) registered for wood preservative uses. EPA is currently reassessing CCA as part of its ongoing reregistration program for older pesticides. Federal law directs EPA to periodically reevaluate older pesticides to ensure that they continue to meet current safety standards.
