Safe Trails Task Force

Crime rate statistics in Indian Country reveal that the incidence of violent crime in Indian Country is significantly higher than the national average. On March 3, 1994, the FBI initiated "Operation Safe Trails" with the Navajo Department of Law Enforcement, in Flagstaff, Arizona. The purpose of the operation, which would later evolve into the Safe Trails Task Force (STTF) program, was to unite the FBI with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. In a collaborative effort to combat the continuing growth of violent crime in Indian Country. STTF participating agencies include the FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Tribal police departments, and state and local law enforcement agencies. These Safe Trails Task Forces combine their resources in an effective manner to address crimes that would normally be under addressed or unaddressed without the STTF. There are currently 15 STTFs funded by the FBI:
