Lake of the Woods Ice Piles, 6 Dec 2006.
Elliott Olson, a SkyWarn Spotter from the Warroad, MN, area reports: I thought you guys would like to see the results of yesterday's windy weather up at Rocky Point (Lake of the Woods). The first picture is just a reference shot from this summer. These ice piles were at least 15' high at the peaks. I don't think we had significant open water on the lake itself, only at the upwind side and only as wide as a wide river, though I didn't go upwind to look (in Canada). Arnessen’s Resort reported that the ice was nearly perfect the night before that wind, at least 6" thick. Then the next morning it was all cracked up by the wind with large areas of solid sheet ice, with plenty of pressure ridges. ...and of course these piled up ice chunks, or ice piles, against the shoreline.
