Providing support to Colorado firefighters is one of the most important missions of the National Weather Service. Last year Colorado National Weather Service offices issued over one thousand site specific forecasts for firefighters involved in wildfire suppression and planned burns.
Fortunately, preplanning can reduce the occurrence and impact of wildfires. Citizens and local communities throughout Colorado have lead the way in innovative fire prevention activities. In order to share these success stories, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has a new publication entitled "At Home in the Woods, Lessons Learned in the Wildland/Urban Interface".

This 136 page booklet is also available on the Federal Emergency Management Agency web site at www.fema.gov . It is an excellent guide for creative and effective ways to reduce the fire danger in your community. In addition to protecting our forests and homes, we owe it to our firefighters to do all we can to mitigate the dangers of wildfires.
