GeophysicsGeophysics is the application of physics (the study of matter, energy, and their
interactions) to the study of the earth. The aim of geophysics is chiefly to decipher what
is inside the earth based on scientific measurements near its surface. GeophysicistMy name is Richie and I am a geophysicist. Rocks, minerals, and especially fossils
fascinated me in my early teens. I enjoyed outdoor field trips and unearthing the remains
of an ancient world. These interests led me to study geology when I started college. Since
I did well in math and physics, I decided to narrow my studies to geophysics. I eventually
earned bachelor's and master's degrees in geophysics. Some geophysicists search for buried remains of ancient civilizations, or look for
underground hazards before building homes, or track underground water pollution, or study
earthquakes. At MMS I look for underground deposits of oil and gas. It is my job to
estimate the location and size of these deposits. I do this by interpreting sound waves
that traveled through the earth. Such estimates allow the Government to ensure that oil
companies give taxpayers a fair price for drilling on public property. It is satisfying to know that I look out for the good of all Americans by determining
the value of our land. It is also fulfilling to piece together the puzzle of what the
inside of the earth looks like, then see if my prediction was correct after the oil
company drills a well. I enjoy the fact that my work challenges me and varies from day to day. I work with
very sophisticated computers, make elaborate maps and drawings, and work closely with
other scientists. Sometimes I do research on areas of special interest, leading to
publications in professional journals or presentations at research conferences.
Educational RequirementsHigh School Math and science curriculum: physics, chemistry, geology (if
possible), computer science, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus (if possible). College Math and science curriculum: calculus-based physics, chemistry, geology,
computer programming, linear algebra, calculus, and differential equations.
Career OpportunitiesMinimum educational level: Bachelor's degree in geophysics or electrical engineering; a master's degree is highly preferred. Most jobs in geophysics are with oil companies. Some jobs are available with environmental companies, Federal and State Governments, engineering firms, and colleges and universities. |
