Cuttyhunk Island Recreational Lodging

Location:  Cuttyhunk Island, MA, 14 miles off the coast of New Bedford and just west of Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

Season of Operation:  Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend.

Description:  A former Coast Guard lifeboat station now converted into a house with 2 separate apartments.

Facilities:  1, 4-bedroom apartment (upstairs) and 1, 2-bedroom apartment (downstairs), picnic area, boat docks, fishing pier, boat launching ramp, nature trails.

Activities:  Swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, and hiking.

Recreation Equipment Available:  TV with basic local stations via satellite and VCR.

General Information:  Cuttyhunk Island is one of the Elizabeth Islands discovered in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold.  The upstairs 4-bedroom apartment can sleep up to 8 people; the downstairs 2-bedroom apartment can sleep up to 5 people.  Each apartment is provided with separate kitchen and bathroom facilities, is fully furnished, including bed linen, towels, and blankets.  Baby pen and folding beds are available on the premises.  A laundry room with washer and dryer is located on the first floor.  Camping out and pets are not allowed.  Guests should bring their own food (very limited and expensive on the island), charcoal, lighter fluid, laundry powder, dish liquid, paper products, etc.  All Coast Guard and uniformed military regulations apply at Coast Guard recreational facilities.

Reservations:  Eligibility is in accordance with Chapter 3 of the MWR Manual.  Reservations are required and will be considered on a prioritization system.  Priority One: Active duty personnel and their dependents.  Applications are accepted beginning February 1 of the year.  Priority Two: All other eligible patrons.  Applications are accepted beginning April 1 of the year.  Payment must be received within one week of the submission of the application.  Once the check is received, the reservation is reserved and will be confirmed with a confirmation number in writing. Credit cards are not accepted.  Recommend checking availability before faxing or mailing reservation requests.  The rental period is usually from 10:00 AM on Saturday to 2:00 PM on the following Friday.  However, other times or dates may be available.  Priority is granted to week-long reservations.  For reservations or other information, contact:

Driving Instructions: From Boston, MA, to New Bedford, MA, take Route 24 to Route 140 south to Route 195 east to Route 18 south (exit #15).  Stay on Route 18 south for about 1 mile.  Take the Downtown Exit.  Go straight on Water Street.  At the stop sign, take a left onto Union Street.  Go to the bottom of the road, go through the lights (look for large signs to boat) take another left.  Cuttyhunk Boat Lines is on the right, behind the Waterfront Visitors Center.
