Technology Truck earns award

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., May 31, 2000 — The Technology Truck, a traveling public education program featuring a technology-rich commercial vehicle, has won an award from the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of America.

Awarded one of seven Best of ITS awards during the 10th annual meeting of the society, the Technology Truck was recognized in the category of education and training.

The Technology Truck is a joint project between the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. It consists of a tractor and 48-foot trailer with expandable sides. It has toured 36 states and four Canadian provinces. More than 16,000 people have toured the truck.

The truck is a classroom and briefing facility on wheels. The vehicle demonstrates technological benefits of the Intelligent Transportation Systems/Commercial Vehicle Operation program through classroom presentations, interactive kiosks, hands-on demonstrations and an in-cab simulator.

The Technology Truck is an effort of ORNL's Transportation Technology Development and Demonstration team. ORNL personnel working on the program are Gary Capps, Kathy Gambrell, Kathy Johnson and John Jordan of the Engineering Technology Division, and Connie Dagley of the Energy Division.
