On November 16, 2006, Hawai’i celebrated becoming the 14th state to go smoke-free and enact a comprehensive law that protects workers throughout the state from exposure to secondhand smoke. In June 2006, U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona issued the federal government's scientific report which concludes that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Act 295 prohibits smoking in enclosed and partially enclosed areas, within 20 feet of doorways and requires signage upon entry to buildings.
Tobacco control advocates from across the state have worked long and tirelessly with the Department of Health, the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai’i, and a host of private and voluntary organizations to support this landmark measure. This law will result not only in better work environments and public places throughout the state, but it will reduce tobacco–related illnesses and save lives.
